Via PaperMag.com: Though writer Jozen Cummings covered much about Drake in PAPER’s Summer Music Issue, on stands now, there were a few more extra tidbits from our interview with the red-hot hip-hop superstar that PAPERMAG thought we’d share with you. Read on for news about Drake’s return to acting, his plans to play Obama and keeping a safe distance from the Internet.

On his music, not his looks, drawing fans:

It’s funny — the thing that I hear the least is ‘Drake makes bad music.’ People always have something to say about the way I look or the way I dress. People nitpick at my physical appearance more than my music, which is fine with me because when I look in the mirror, I know I’m not an unattractive person.

Via PaperMAG.com: t may sound cliché, but Drake remembers October 31, 2009, like it was yesterday.

That was the night Drake knew his transformation from Aubrey Drake Graham — star of teen soap opera Degrassi: The Next Generation — to famous rapper had begun. That was the night Jay-Z performed in his hometown.

“Jay-Z coming to Toronto meant every single person was going to be there, which meant the majority of the people in my life were there,” the 23-year-old rapper recalls. “And there was a big rumor around the city: Is Drake close enough to Jay where he would bring me out? And people were like, ‘No, it would never happen.’”

Via LaTimes.com: The crowd at downtown Los Angeles’ Club Nokia arrived primed and pumped up. Not just to be entertained, but, more palpably, to witness a make-or-break moment.

When the Canadian rapper-cum-R&B crooner Drake bounded onstage last month, he was greeted with a hail of applause as well as an eerie cathodic blue glow that quickly settled over the 2,300 capacity auditorium — the side effect of hundreds of camera phones aimed and at the ready for Drake’s high-energy opening number, “Forever.”

The audience shouted along, fists aloft, with every word to the first couplet: “Last name: ‘Ever.’ First name: ‘Greatest’/ Like a sprained ankle, boy — I ain’t nuttin’ to play with.”

Don’t say it. We already know what half of you are thinking: Hell naw, that muthafucka? Yep. Aubrey “Drake” Graham, 23. That muthafucka. As in, that new hip-hop artist from Toronto. As in, the one who owned 2009 thanks to a little mixtape known as So Far Gone, hip-hop’s first instant-classic tape from a virtually unknown artist since Young Jeezy’s Trap or Die. As in, the one who landed in the middle of a major-label bidding war so closely watched that his ultimate signing to Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown made news in a way not seen since the day 50 Cent signed to Shady/Aftermath/Interscope. As in, the one who had more than 60,000 downloads of his So Far Gone mixtape in its first day.

Drake has had an unbelievable year. Since dropping his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, in February 2009, the Toronto-bred artist signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money label (after a huge bidding war with every major label), scored two Grammy nominations and has been cosigned by hip-hop’s biggest stars including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Young Jeezy—all before dropping his debut LP, Thank Me Later.

Problem is, along with all the praise, comes the hate. Known for growing up in an upper middle class neighborhood in Canada, starring on popular Canadian teeny bopper show Degrassi: The Next Generation, and spending an equal amount of time singing on record as he does rhyming, Drizzy’s place in hip-hop is often critiqued by fans who worship MCs for their street cred, as well as their skills on the mic.
